Summary:

The Director plans, implements, and evaluates the administrative, supervisory and direct care activities for assigned program team staff and for overall Ambulatory Services in conjunction with departments and program leadership. Oversees the clinical operations, staff development, clinical competencies, scope of practice, staff development and regulatory compliance of professional and support staff in Ambulatory Services to ensure assessment, planning, provision and evaluation of patient care. Provides leadership for complex programs by communicating goals and strategies, providing direction and priorities and providing enthusiasm and support.

Responsibilities:

The Director supports, communicates, implements, and enforces the philosophy, strategic plan, mission, values, standards, policies and procedures of Nationwide Children’s Hospital. This position has direct/shared accountability for the Practice of Nursing and Unlicensed Assistive Personnel providing clinical care

  1. Leads/manages major ambulatory projects/initiatives such as new service development, IS projects, etc
  2. Recruits, trains, evaluates, develops, and as necessary, disciplines and/or terminates subordinate staff.
  3. Manages day-to-day operations of approximately 16-20 outpatient specialty clinics.
  4. Oversees the delivery of patient care by all professional and support staff within the specialty clinics and Ambulatory Services.
  5. Develops, in conjunction with Financial Services, operating and capital budgets for the specialty clinics. Monitors activity, revenue, expense and capital budgets for the specialty clinics. Analyzes, monitors and controls allocations for financial, human and material resources.
  6. Schedules resources to provide patient care in a cost effective manner.
  7. Develops Ambulatory Specialty clinics section policies and procedures. Assists subordinate supervisory personnel in developing effective departmental policies and procedures. Participates in the review of other Nationwide Children’s Hospital policies and procedures as appropriate.
  8. Ensures the orientation of department personnel to role functions, policies and procedures and information systems. Assists and directs staff in the identification of their own learning needs and assists staff in meeting those needs.
  9. Coordinates staff representation on departmental, hospital and community task forces, committees, quality teams and advisory groups. Serves as a representative to such groups when appropriate.
  10. Promotes teamwork by building a team environment and fostering cross functional collaboration.
  11. Works closely with physician Division Chiefs on all aspects of patient care, business functions, scheduling and physician productivity issues within the Specialty Clinics.
  12. Promotes continuous improvement by developing and revising standards, implementing appropriate corrective actions to resolve discrepancies, ensuring adherence to continuous performance improvement and ensuring compliance with the Corporate Integrity Program.
  13. Responsible for assuring that specialty clinics and Ambulatory Services are compliant with all accrediting bodies such as JCHAO, CMS and ODH.
  14. Participates in the strategic planning process for those programs that are part of the group of specialty clinics being managed. This planning would include delivery of care, facilities, marketing, staffing, capital equipment needs and information services.
  15. Facilitates change management, and leads major projects/initiatives such as operational restructuring, new services and/or clinic development, and major capital projects.
  16. Analyzes and measures the core business processes of the specialty clinics. Develops and implements new practices to improve the business process functions of the clinics.
  17. Assure performance standards for all staff within Ambulatory Clinical Services are appropriate and with their scope.
  18. Implement and evaluate the organization’s mission, goals and objectives and leads development of the philosophy and strategic plan for Ambulatory Services.

KNOWLEDGE , SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in nursing is required. MHA, MBA or Masters of Nursing is preferred. Work requires a level of knowledge equivalent to that obtained by completing a master’s degree program in nursing, hospital administration, business administration, or closely related field.
  2. Five years of clinical experience in area of expertise desirable.
  3. Supervisory skills required to plan, assign, and evaluate the work of subordinate staff. Analytical skills required to oversee and organize the work of others, and to develop and administer sound policies, procedures, budgets, and multidisciplinary practices required.
  4. High level of initiative, self-direction, and accountability for actions required.
  5. Exceptional customer service, communication, negotiation, and interpersonal relationship skills required for interaction with contacts.
  6. Strong leadership and decision-making skills required.
  7. Skill in promoting multidisciplinary collaboration; ability to act as a facilitator and change agent required.
  8. Strong organizational skills required to evaluate existing policies/procedures/standards, and to develop and implement enhancements and/or new systems required.

MINIMUM PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to see, hear, speak, read, and perform manual tasks with or without accommodation and care for oneself, with little or no difficulty. Performance of principal duties and responsibilities may require the ability to travel.
